The Most Important Fact of All

Article #5 of 5

20-24 Minute Read

For those of you just joining this Article Series on the Great Debate about Depression, you’ve missed a lot.

  • The intro discussed the main things that are debated, the key influences to be aware of, and the most important Debate to remember throughout this discussion (5-7 minute read)
  • The second article focused on the cause of the Great Debate about Depression, and the thing that is in your best interest to be aware of throughout the Debate (11-13 minute read)
  • The third article discussed the Spectrum of belief systems within the Debate, and a Master Fact to be aware of that you can adopt today to help conquer your depression completely (16-20 minute read)
  • And the fourth article outlined some details that show how no matter where someone lies on the spectrum, it has been scientifically proven that the root cause of depression can be changed and eliminated, and therefore depression can be changed and eliminated as well (16-20 minute read)

That’s already 48 to 60 minutes of content in this Article Series. That’s plenty to keep you busy. Like I said, you missed a lot up to this point.

However, if you’re just starting with this article, you should be fine. This article discusses the Most Important Fact of all to be aware of during the Debate about Depression, and anything you read, contemplate, research or ponder about the topic of depression as well.

Facts with a Capital “F”

Please know that the word Fact with a capital “F” is used quite frequently in this article, Article Series, and this website.

I like to use this to indicate something that is undeniable, irrefutable, 100% True. Something that is equivalent to saying 2 + 2 = 4. I know it’s a little bold. I just want you to know that I do not take using the word Fact lightly, especially when I, personally, use it.

This is especially true when I discuss “the most important Fact of all” in this article.

Seeing as it is an undeniable, irrefutable, 100% true Fact- each and every person on this planet should embrace it and celebrate it. Like all things that relate to the Truth- those that embrace these Facts live a much, much different life than those that don’t.

Continue a Couple Things

In this fifth and final article in the Article Series on the Great Debate about Depression,

we are going to continue two things from Article #4.

First Thing: Continue the Theme

The first thing we are going to continue is using the theme of “conflict resolution”. This theme was introduced in the Article #4.

Again, there is a Debate about what depression is, what causes it, and what are the best ways to treat it. If this Debate would end, it would go a LONG way in helping all of mankind.

Remember, as discussed in the previous article, the key to conflict resolution is finding a common ground and identifying aligned interests and priorities that both sides share.

A key to finding a common ground is exercising the skill of compassion

Second Thing: Continue Where We Left off

This article will also pick up and continue where we left off in Article #4.

For those of you that are just starting with this article or for those of you that have forgotten, Article #4 finished by outlining how it is a Fact that “the thing” both sides claim to be the root cause of depression can be changed.

More specifically, it showed how it is 100% true that “the thing” that the nature side of the Debate is the root cause of depression can be changed.

It also showed that it is 100% true that “the thing” that the nurture side of the Debate is the root cause of depression can be changed too.

“The thing” that the most extreme people on the nurture side of the Debate believe to be the sole root cause of depression are our values and beliefs (which are formed as a result of life experiences).

Yes, our values and beliefs can be changed.

“The thing” that the most extreme people on the nature side of the Debate believe to be the sole root cause of depression are our genetics, DNA, biology, etc.

Near end of the article, a fair amount of resources were provided that show how our DNA is not our destiny, and that our genes can be changed naturally too (IE: without any scientific drugs, medical devices, or methods). The expanding field of epigenetics is confirming this Fact- you can change our DNA.

At the very end of Article #4 it showed that, even though both sides vastly disagree on what the root cause of depression is, we actually have created a common ground. And remember that in conflict resolution, finding a common ground is absolutely essential.

That common ground is the Fact that the root cause of depression CAN be changed. Both sides should agree on this Fact.

The Sources of the Jargon

Yay! We Have a Common Ground!

Yay!

We accomplished conflict resolution 101!

We have a common ground!

Both side’s claimed root causes can be changed. Albeit, it does require some hard work and true, genuine desire. But it can be done. Our DNA can be changed, and so can our beliefs and values.

YAY!

What does this mean?

Wait, let’s slow down for a second.

What are the implications of this?

Is the Debate over?

Yes, it is a Fact that our values and beliefs can be changed and yes, it also is a Fact that our DNA and genes can be changed to.

But is there a deeper meaning we can take away from these Facts?

Remember how, in many ways, the “nature vs. nurture debate” is largely about the “physical vs. the non-physical” as well as the “tangible vs. the intangible”?

Well, realize that “science” is often touted as the main resource that the nature side relies on. They love genetic testing, biochemistry, DNA analysis, neurotransmitter data, etc… other tangible things and physical, hard data.

Some of the recent scientific data that is coming out is showing some very interesting things about how the intangible can change the tangible, and how the non-physical can change the physical.

There are two quotes that are worth bringing to your attention.

“According to the science of epigenetics (the study of how environmental factors outside of DNA influence changes in gene expression), stem cells and even DNA can be altered through magnetic fields, heart coherence, positive mental states and intention. Top scientists around the world agree: genetic determinism is a flawed theory”.

That quote is from this article: Confirmed by science: You really can change your DNA - and here's how.

“Your biology doesn’t spell your destiny, and you aren’t controlled by your genetic makeup. Instead, your genetic activity is largely determined by your thoughts, attitudes, and perceptions. Epigenetics is showing that your perceptions and thoughts control your biology, which places you in the driver’s seat. By changing your thoughts, you can influence and shape your own genetic readout.”

This second quote is from this article: How Your Thoughts Change Your Brain, Cells and Genes

Both of these articles and also the countless resources available about the fast-growing field of epigenetics confirm one important Fact (Article #4 provides a list of a few of these resources).

That Fact is the Fact that we can change our DNA “naturally”. IE: without any tangible substances or devices.

This Fact opens up a deeper question:

If we can change our DNA “naturally”, IE: without any tangible substances or devices, what does that mean for this Debate?

What are the implications of this Fact?

Well, as any good guide would do, I must be candid and point out the Fact that this is a pretty strong blow towards the “It’s solely nature, and it’s solely physical and solely tangible” side of The Great Debate.

If the intangible can change the tangible, what does that mean about the validity of that side of The Debate and its theories?

There’s More

It actually gets a little more precarious for the nature side of The Great Debate too.

The #1 remedy the nature side of the spectrum makes as a recommendation to best overcome depression is antidepressants. Recent data shows that 12% of American Adults are taking an  antidepressant. The global antidepressants industry is estimated to be around $7.0 billion in 2019 (off from a peak of $15 billion 2003, largely due to patent cliffs and generic versions of drug becoming available).

Clearly this is a big, big topic in the depression industry.

There are some Facts that everyone concerned about depression should know. Quite frankly, it would benefit all of society if every human being were aware of these Facts and embraced them just as much as the law of gravity, and the Fact that there is this thing is the sun that lights up the sky.

The Facts every human should be aware of regarding antidepressants are these:

  1. The research has shown that the serotonin theory that supports the use of antidepressants is exaggerated and
  2. The head of Harvard’s Placebo studies program has said that the biggest reason why antidepressants make people feel better is not because of the chemicals of the drug itself, but because of the placebo effect.

Depression actually creates a perfect scenario for a placebo effect.

This is because hopelessness is at the heart of depression. A good portion of society also accepts it as common knowledge that “antidepressants work”. So if someone goes to a trained and licensed professional (who also has a Medical Degree, and therefore is a doctor), and that doctor tells them it’s going to work… and “the rest of society” thinks its going to work… odds are the patient is going to have a lot of hope that the medication will work too.

That is the perfect scenario to create a placebo effect.

The placebo effect’s prevalence for antidepressants shows that if you eliminate hopelessness you also eliminate a lot of the distress and despair in people’s lives (hopelessness was also discussed in Article #4). This is true for whatever you want to call that distress and/or despair regardless of whether or not it can be formally diagnosed as depression.

Ouch.

Yeah, ouch.

Two of the core pillars to the, “It’s solely nature!” side of The Great Debate just took some big blows. It turns out their core thesis (that it’s solely physical and solely tangible) has some big holes in it, and our DNA can be changed via natural, intangible methods. And after 4,000+ years of ponderings, contemplation, and research; the #1 product and #1 recommendation that the nature side of The Great Debate has developed (antidepressants) also has some serious flaws and dangerous side effects.

Time to declare a winner?

Not so fast.

I’m not sure about that either.

First and foremost, there are also shortcomings in the primary method recommended by the “nurture side” of The Great Debate.

As I am sure you can imagine, the #1 remedy the nurture side of the Debate recommends is some form of psychotherapy. Unfortunately, the track record in that area isn’t that great either.

Long term data and follow-up studies is limited, but research it enough, and you will find that relapse rates are to be somewhere in the 50%+ range for different types of therapy on a standalone basis. Although it is often found that psychotherapy on a standalone basis vs. antidepressants on a standalone basis often has a lower relapse rate- a relapse rate of over 50% clearly is not the best results that can be created.

Maybe it’s because of so much of the content available about depression talks about how depression can be “coped and managed with” vs. “conquered completely”?

That’s one possible reason.

I must say that secondary gain explains a lot of the reason why therapy isn’t as effective as it could be too.

In order to change and conquer personal challenges, we human beings must really, truly want to change, and we also must be really, truly be willing to do whatever it takes to make that change happen.

If there is some secondary benefit from our personal challenges that we value highly and are not ready to get rid of, then we humans will not change. That is because if we are getting benefits from our personal problem (consciously or very likely unconsciously), this limits how much we really, truly want to change. It also limits what we are willing to do in order to change.

Good professionals are aware of this and help educate their clients on it. My guess is that, given the data about relapse rates, the dynamic of secondary gain is underappreciated by many professionals.

I will dissect the various shortcomings, biased and ineffective incentive systems, dangerous and disempowering jargon, and flaws of the current models of therapy in some other articles.

For now, know that the current “success rate” is what it is, and it definitely is not the best.

0% relapse with results in only a few days or hours would be “the best”.

Looks like us humans are still working on reaching that goal.

Put Today's Science into Perspective

Embrace the Spirit

We also have to acknowledge the Fact that society as a whole needs a certain portion of the spirit and mental energy behind the “nature side” of The Great Debate.

Yes, it is a Fact that the human mind and consciousness and beliefs and emotions and memories are all intangible; and yes, the non-physical attributes of the human mind are all incredibly complex. And, yes, our life experiences do impact how we think, act, and feel.

However, the Fact remains that the scientific method and relate research techniques has worked in curing a whole host of other ailments for human beings.

I personally think that this challenge of understanding each and every single one of the physical AND non-physical processes that occur in the organ called the human brain is by far and away the most complex riddle of all. In many ways, it parallels the saying that, “Mastering the self is the most difficult challenge of all”.

Yes, it’s a pretty daunting task, but who are we to back down from a challenge!?

Yes, it is fascinating. However. . .

We all have to admit that we do have some pretty darn fascinating research and scans and images and mapping and understanding coming out about the brain.

However, the amount we really, truly understand about the brain circuitry and all (100%) of the details of its physical components of the brain, AND how these physical components specifically interact with the non-physical happenings of “the mind”. . .

. . . Our knowledge about these things and how they Truly interact with each other is nowhere near the maximum potential level of understanding we can reach.

It is one thing to run a few tests and a few scans and to say, “ABC part of the brain lights up or shows activity.” or “XYZ part of the brain changes in size when 123 happens”.

However, you must admit that is really a far stretch from understanding each and every single detail of all of the brain’s circuits and networks.

I love science. I love technology. And I love advancement

I also love being objective and realistic.

Yes, we know a lot, but it is nowhere near the maximum potential.

The Best Way to Overcome Depression

What is The Maximum Potential we can Understand?

I think “the maximum potential” will be something along the lines of having a device and related methods that when you use the device and scan certain parts of the brain, you can return to specific memories, specific beliefs, etc. IE: you’d use this device, and the patient could ask, “Find my favorite color.”, and then the machine would scan your brain and find your favorite color every time, with 100% accuracy.

THAT is what “maximum understanding of the brain” can theoretically be.
THAT would also be both cool as heck and creepy as heck at the same time.

Obviously the device’s capabilities would need to be more robust than just, “What’s my favorite color?” (That would be pretty freaking awesome and step in the right direction though!).

To have utility to help with mental and emotional distress, it would need to be able to be asked, “What is the belief that is holding me back?” or something along those lines, and give you the answer… and maybe even guide you through changing it too

Yeah, creepy… and cool…

. . . but still creepy. . .

Yet, still cool.

Okay, Back to Reality

Sorry, my entrepreneur and creative mind ran away a little bit there. I could ponder scenarios like this all-day long.

You all can thank me later for thinking of a multi-trillion-dollar idea and sharing it freely with the world. You read it here first!

Or maybe you saw something similar in The Matrix?

Either way, the main reason why I mention this is that until we have a device with that level of capabilities:

Today, in 2017, we are nowhere near the maximum potential level of understanding possible for the human brain.

In other words, until we have capabilities like the Matrix-like device described above:

Today, in 2017, are nowhere close to 100% accurately and specifically detailing all (100%) of the specific ways the physical and tangible aspects of the human brain interacts with and creates the non-physical and intangible aspects of the human mind and conscious awareness.

Yes, science is discovering some intriguing and exciting stuff.

However, we have a long way to go.

In fact, the former head of the National Institute of Mental Health agrees (the “NIMH”, which is the main federal agency in the U.S. It receives +/- $1.5 billion each year from the U.S. government to review and oversee mental health issues in the U.S)

In this article, Thomas Insel (the former Director of the NIMH) shares the following:

“Patients with mental disorders deserve better. NIMH has launched the Research Domain Criteria (RDoC) project to transform diagnosis by incorporating genetics, imaging, cognitive science, and other levels of information to lay the foundation for a new classification system.” [However, after the first 18 months of launching this project, Mr. Insel says], “It became immediately clear that we cannot design a system based on biomarkers or cognitive performance because we lack the data…We need to begin collecting the genetic, imaging, physiologic, and cognitive data to see how all the data – not just the symptoms – cluster and how these clusters relate to treatment response.”

Again, we know a lot, but we really, truly are just beginning this journey and have a long way to go to reach the maximum possible level of understanding.

Until This Happens. . .

I really value my brain.

I’m sure you do too.

Is it safe to be messing with the physical aspect of our brains until we have THAT Matrix-like device level of capability and understanding?

The Fact of the matter is that until we have something with the types of capabilities of the Matrix-like device envisioned in this article, we are NOT at the “maximum level of understanding of the human brain”.

Until we have capabilities like the Matrix-type device described in this article, please take everything you learn about “cutting-edge research” with a grain of salt.

New science discoveries can be fun and exciting, and should be celebrated. It is amazing to see what we humans can discover and do when we focus our mental energy in certain ways. We are lucky to live in the time we do right now. Enjoy how cool and fascinating the new research is.

However,

As fascinating as it can be, many people get way too excited about science and claim we have figured out the most we possibly can figure out or (even worse) claim that we have all we need to know out when, in Fact, we are nowhere near the maximum level of understanding that we humans can be at.

Until we have a certain level of capabilities, be wary these types of claims.

Our fascination needs to be put in context and put in perspective.

For some organs and other things related to human beings we are close to the maximum level.

For others, the journey of understanding is just beginning.

Is the Debate Over?

So… there’s a winner, right?

For now, maybe.

Again, we have to acknowledge the utility and inspiration that the mental energy behind the nature side of the debate provides for all of mankind.

If a device with the types of capabilities of the Matrix-like device described in this article can be created, how many problems would it solve? How much pain would it alleviate? How many diseases could it cure?

It is this portion of the spirit and mental energy behind “the nature” side of The Great Debate that must be embraced.

We all need to appreciate the Fact that the scientific method and related research techniques that has worked for so many other human ailments may one day lead to us humans experiencing a lot less pain and distress.

Who has the right?

Yes, creating this type of device is one heck of a riddle to solve, and quite the aspiration and dream to pursue. But who is anyone to stop someone else from assembling a team of minds to work together towards a big dream and ginormous goal?

Or, better yet:

Which human being has any right to tell another human being what they can or can’t do when they put their mind to it?

This includes if someone decides to put their mind towards attempting to create this civilization-transforming brain device.

It also includes if anyone decides to put their mind towards conquering their depression once and for all.

The Most Important Fact of All

Yes, it is incredibly important to realize the Fact that the root cause of depression can be changed. Realizing this Fact goes a long way in eliminating hopelessness, which is a major symptom and major contributor to experiencing depression.

However, that is not the most important Fact to this entire Debate.

The last three sentences in the previous section touch on the most important Fact of all.

It really, truly is absolutely fascinating and memorizing to see what we humans can accomplish when we put our most powerful asset to use- our mind.

That is one of the most important Facts of all:

One of the most important Facts of all is the Fact is the power of our mind is the most powerful resource we humans have at our disposal.

Capturing this incredible power is *THE key* to conquering any personal challenge AND also *THE key* to achieving any personal goal.

This also means that capturing the power of your mind is the key to conquering depression AND then going on to build the life of your dreams.

Chances are if you are experiencing some form of despair and/or distress (or depression), that power is being used in ways that are bringing you down instead of lifting you up.

Learn to change the focus and direction of that power, and you change the entire trajectory of your entire life.

In order to do that, the Fact is that you need to focus on “THE thing” that allows you to do that.

“THE thing” is the power of the human mind.

“THE thing” that allows people to change their DNA and their genes is also “THE thing” that allows people to change their values belief. Again, that is the power of the human mind.

The more someone embraces reality instead of fighting it, the more they will enjoy their lives.

The more someone embraces the Fact that their mind is the most powerful resource they have at their disposal, the more they will benefit from embracing this Fact.

Yes, if you are experiencing depression, you may not be too happy with how your life is going right now, and may feel you do not have completely control of your most powerful asset. This is a very, very common occurrence in life. All this really means is that be learning how to capture the power of your own mind. Power is powerful. It takes time to learn how to use it properly- especially if no one has taught you the right ways to capture the power yet.

How do you Capture this incredible power?

There are a few ways to capture this incredible power and get the power of your mind to start benefiting you again. ConquerMyDepressionToday.com’s free eBook has a lot of practical strategies to harness (and re-harness) its power- especially ones that deal with managing your focus.

Whether it’s our eBook or some other avenue it is pretty much guaranteed that you will find that, like many things in life, it all starts with belief.

Said differently- the way to capture the power of your mind is to harness the power of belief.

This means that the way to capture (or recapture) the power of the human mind, and then conquer depression completely is to first really, truly, genuinely, and wholeheartedly believe you, personally can conquer your depression once and for all.

This also means that you must focus on the Fact that:

Whether you think you can or think you can't,

You're right.

How the heck can any human being conquer any challenge unless they first believe they can actually conquer that challenge!?

That actually is a “law of the universe”.

In order for any human being to conquer a challenge (or achieve any goal), that human being absolutely must believe they can conquer that challenge (and must believe that they can achieve their goal).

If they do not create these beliefs they are not putting their most powerful asset to use.

Keep this in mind

As you read or research anything about depression or find yourself coming across something related to The Great Debate, please keep this in mind. This is especially true if you see, read, or hear comments such as “this is how you cope and manage” with your difficulties.

The people sharing that type of guidance may have good intentions, but that is not enough. Their goals and their dreams and their standards are not high enough. They also likely do not fully appreciate or believe in the power of the human mind.

So, again, one final time.

The Fact of all Facts about depression to focus on… whether you side more with the nature crowd or more with the nurture crowd…

The Fact to focus on is the Fact that whether you think you can or think you can’t, you’re right.

THAT is the most important Fact of all.
